I would still like to see a fund like Backstage here in the UK/Europe that is vertical agnostic and focuses on deploying capital specifically to projects with an underrepresented founder. Having something like that which is fully conscious of the root causes of social inequality is vital. The US also has Kapor Capital doing similar work.
Many investors are now interested in ‘diverse founders’ but not fully clued up on why there is underrepresentation in the first place. What I love about Arlan and Backstage Capital is that she has lived her truth and its at the core of her mission. She is legit. Many UK investors need to properly educate themselves on privilege and oppression before they can be champions for diverse venture capital.
